The Trump Suspensions, Big Tech and Section 230 on Can't You Read (Link)

Editors note: todays article about Trumps social media suspensions, Big Tech companies and the potential repeal of Section 230 comes to you from my image blog Cant You Read and is being linked here as part of my ongoing fight against online censorship. If you like this piece, please help me get eyeballs on my work by sharing a link to it someplace else on social media.
Please note, this teaser is reprinted from ninaillingworth.com because I only have so much energy for busy work.

Actually, the Cake is a Lie

Admit it; you smiled a little, at least inside, when you found out Trump’s social media accounts had finally been suspended in the wake of the January 6th, 2021 chud insurrection attempt on Capitol Hill. I know that I did, and who could really blame us? As we discussed last week, Trump’s social media posts have a body count and rich white fascists getting suspended for organizing a revanchist coup online, isn’t exactly a free speech issue; Downmarket Mussolini should have been suspended a very long time ago, quite frankly.
And therein of course, lies the rub; why now, or rather, why two weeks before Trump leaves office? If Big Tech suspended Trump for inciting violence, where exactly have they been the past four years? If Trump just got suspended for inspiring an insurrection attempt, how come he wasn’t suspended back in the spring when he tried to do the same thing during the anti-lockdown protests? Does this have anything to do with the fact that Joe Biden also wants to repeal Section 230? Am I really supposed to believe billionaire crypto-libertarian Tech Bros suddenly care about the carnage their services are enabling, when they’ve spent the past five years proving that they most certainly do not? Because quite frankly, I don’t, and I decided to get to the bottom of the decision to ban Trump; a decision I agree with and sincerely wish had happened much sooner.
The devil is in the details today over on Can’t You Read as we ask is it even possible for Big Tech companies to both do the right thing, and for the right reasons?

The Skinny: Chuds, Social Media & Censorship Edition (Link)

Editor’s note: The Skinny is a semi-regular, informal journal, published on my (always free-to-read) Patreon Blog, that collects my work from social media; posts are typically edited and expanded from their original text for clarity.

Does Anyone Even Know What Free Speech Is Anymore?

In the aftermath of the January 6th, chud riot and attempted coup on Capitol Hill, an intense debate about censorship, free speech, and the rights of posters living under the tyranny of Big Tech platforms. There’s just one problem; namely that all of that is complete bullsh*t, and enforcing the terms of service agreement against wealthy white fascists is neither censorship, nor tyranny. Cobbling together my thoughts on this and other related subjects, I’ve published a new edition of an old classic, The Skinny, over on Patreon this morning.

From Dennis Prager, to Majorie Taylor Green, and including all the crypto-libertarian free speech absolutists in-between – we’re taking no prisoners in this informal journal piece. Check it out over on my Patreon Blog by clicking on the title header or quotation bloc below:

The Skinny: Chuds, Social Media & Censorship Edition

“More to the point however, even if you an I would agree that social media should be a publicly controlled utility, with an entirely people-powered moderation system that truly stood for free speech rights in the public sphere, surely it would still be against the rules to preach hatred, incite violence and literally organize a fascist insurrection on that new, Utopian social media platform, wouldn’t it? And that is of course, where the argument that Trump or any of his fascist cronies are the victims of corporate censorship, falls apart entirely as well; the right to free speech online does in fact end someplace before inciting fascist chuds to commit criminal acts of violence against your enemies.”

Patreon Blog Link: Why I'm Doing Okay Without Twitter in My Life

Editor’s note: In light of the fact that Twitter has largely broken the barrier between "media" and social media" it seems appropriate to include a link to this piece here on Media Madness; especially since the media influencers on Twitter, are some of the principle components of the propaganda machine the platform serves as. Check out this short essay about the sinister nature of Twitter and why I don’t miss it, over on my always free-to-read Patreon blog.

—–

Have you ever spent any time thinking about what Twitter really is? No, of course not, that’s the kind of question nobody who is actually using Twitter ever gets around to asking; and I’m really no different than anyone reading this in that respect. Of course, in light of Jack Dorsey and his increasingly omnipresent platform giving me the boot on Christmas Day, I’ve had a lot more time to ponder that question recently and it’s made me realize that perhaps being permanently suspended from a propaganda “Death Star” isn’t such a bad break after all. You see, far from being a mere chat program, I’ve come to more fully understand Twitter’s role as a vast and altogether quite sinister influence market; a company whose real business model is literally the unregulated dissemination of propaganda on behalf of the wealthy and powerful. As has become all too common in the later stages of a dying Pig Empire, the public has been encouraged to understand its own relationship with social media in an inverted, or ass-backwards way; find out more by reading Why I’m Doing Okay Without Twitter in My Life on my (free) Patreon blog.
