Nina-Bytes: The Impending Rule of Unreality

Editor's note: Nina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

Yesterday on my Facebook Journal, I published several discussions that touched on what it means when fascist lies, fantasies, and conspiracy theories acquire the force of law, and with it real power to distort our supposedly democratic society. Today then, let's look at a couple of articles that demonstrate what fascists weaponizing "unreality" in the political process actually looks like, and why that's a very ominous sign in a Pig Empire actively falling under overt fascist rule.

First up, let's take a look at this October 24th, 2022 article about the Pennsylvania GOP's most recent attempt to impeach Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, written by Akela Lacy over on the Intercept:

Larry Krasner Impeachment Committee Relies on Widely Panned Journal Study

Frankly I don't want to wade too deeply into the left wing side of the debate about the so-called "progressive prosecutor" movement here; you can be certain that American fascists aren't tossing their cookies about guys like Krasner because of his insufficient commitment to prison abolition. As the article notes, what we're really talking about here is an establishment Republican (and conservative Democrat) attempt to remove a marginally progressive official they loathe, explicitly against the will of his constituents; who surprise, surprise, aren't affluent white fascists:

"Monday’s report is the latest step in a series of yearslong efforts to curb Krasner’s power or remove him from office entirely — despite the fact that the progressive DA was overwhelmingly reelected a year ago. Krasner’s attempts to implement criminal justice reforms and address the underlying causes of mass incarceration have made him a target of lawmakers from both parties since his election in 2017. As removal efforts built steam among Republicans, state House Democrats joined the opposing party last month in voting to hold Krasner in contempt for his refusal to comply with a subpoena in the impeachment efforts."

While this all looks very official, the twist here is that almost every accusation against Krasner is pure nonsense. The arguments being used to impeach Krasner are based on fascist election propaganda about crime, conspiracy theories, and a politically-motivated study that's been widely debunked by data scientists. It's not just about Larry Krasner either, research shows that there is literally no evidence linking progressive prosecutors to rising crime rates in cities anywhere; which exposes a lie that underpins the entire unhinged fascist attack on any prosecutor that so much as utters the words "bail reform." Bonus points if you guessed that this "moral panic about crime as politics" operation is secretly about race; because it is.

In other words reactionary politicians are transforming lies, into the force of law, for the purposes of actively violating the democratic will of Philadelphia voters; which is precisely what legally and politically-empowered fascism in progress looks like. Why is that bad news even if you don't live in Philly? Because as this October 25th, 2002 article by Kaleigh Rogers at FiveThirtyEight points out, fascist fantasy as the law of the land seems poised to strike well beyond the mean streets of Pennsylvania:

Most Candidates Who Think 2020 Was Rigged Are Probably Going To Win In November

If you've read my writing, you know I loathe "horse race" political coverage as much as anyone reading this does, so let's not waste too much time on this piece of fluff. The important point we need to take from this article is that over a hundred Republicans pushing the objectively fascist "Big Lie" about the 2020 election, are about to take real political power in Amerikkkan society;

"Luna is one of well over a hundred of candidates running this fall who have denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election and have a strong chance of winning their race. Of the 185 Republican candidates running for House, Senate and governor’s seats who have denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election, 124 — or 67 percent — are in races our forecast currently pins at “Solid R,” meaning they have a 95-in-100 or better chance of winning. Overall, a bigger share of election deniers are running in Solid R races than Republican candidates in general: Of the 496 Republican candidates running for House, Senate and governor, 225 — or 45 percent — are in Solid R races."

As you can see, this problem isn't really about Democrats versus Republicans, but rather a Republican Party happily nominating fascist conspiracy theorists in safe seats, over pretty much every other type of reactionary on offer. This is not only evidence that the party as a whole has embraced fascism, but also a deadly perilous moment in American history. Fascists stand on the verge of legally declaring their reactionary propaganda and conspiracy theories the understood law of the land, and no amount of "respecting the standards and norms" is going to protect us from that kind of nightmare.

Nina-Bytes: Last Call For Ivermectin Rubes in the Online Left

Editor's note: Nina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

Right Wing Health Care Providers Making Millions Off Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin

Over the past few weeks on Nina-Bytes, we've briefly touched on various forms of pandemic profiteering and its fallout; a problem that clearly goes well beyond price gouging and speaks to the fundamental neofeudalist transformation our society is undergoing as we speak. Today I thought I'd stay on theme by examining recent news that the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis is launching an investigation into two right wing propaganda groups for pushing bunk Covid treatments. Amazingly enough, this investigation is primarily the result of journalism published in Time Magazine, and facts revealed in this September 28th, 2021 story by Micah Lee, over on The Intercept.

In that article, Lee details how two (extremely) right wing-aligned organizations, America’s Frontline Doctors and telemedicine provider SpeakWithAnMD.com, raked in millions of dollars shucking ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, and bogus online consultations. Delving into the politics of these organizations, Lee adds:

"America’s Frontline Doctors, which debuted in the summer of 2020, has close ties to a network of right-wing efforts to undermine public health during the pandemic, including the Tea Party Patriots. AFLDS’s founder, physician Simone Gold, was arrested and charged after the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6. She and other doctors have appeared in widely shared videos arguing that the drugs hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin — which are primarily used to treat malaria in humans and parasitic worms in livestock, respectively — are effective treatments for Covid-19, despite warnings from the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention against using them.

The extremely partisan group also misleads people about Covid-19 vaccines, which they refer to as “experimental biological agents,” and against public health measures like vaccine mandates, masking, social distancing, and restrictions on businesses. In a video titled “The Truth About Covid-19 Vaccines,” which has received over 1.3 million views, Gold falsely argues that Covid-19 is not very deadly and that the vaccines are more dangerous than the virus itself. Over 690,000 Americans so far have died from the virus, and unvaccinated people now make up 99 percent of recent Covid-19 deaths."

Frankly I could quote the entire article, but the short story here is that the whole bloody thing is a scam to sell bunk medicine to sick people; and it's a scam with reactionary political overtones at that. In fact, when it comes to ivermectin in particular, this isn't even a new scam; Trump himself ran this same game with hydroxychloroquine all the way back in 2020.

Now maybe that doesn't surprise you; it probably shouldn't, given the popularity of vaccine fearmongering and ivermectin on the openly fascist Fox News network. Unfortunately as anyone in the online left who hasn't been living in a cave for the past year can tell you, this news will come as a shock to a lot of people who really should have known better. Lead by faux-left pied piper reactionaries, online leftism has developed a massive anti-vax crank problem; one that doesn't appear to be vanishing even as the anti-vax movement itself disintegrates.

The mainstream media doesn't seem very interested in this story, and I don't have a lot of faith in the power of Congress to stop fascist culture war tactics at this point. As a member of the online left however, I need to ask the people around me if they're paying attention as this whole grift unravels? I don't know, and frankly I don't care why folks who think they're leftists signed up for reactionary anti-vax nonsense, but surely at the point you're following guys who hawk horse deworming paste alongside some of the worst nazis on the internet, it's time to reconsider your position, isn't it?

If it isn't, maybe it's time you stopped calling yourself a leftist and just got on with your new life campaigning for "populists" like Josh Hawley.

Nina-Bytes: Weimar American Justice Strikes Again

Editor's note: Nina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

A Florida Anarchist Will Spend Years in Prison for Online Posts Prompted by Jan. 6 Riot

Well, if this lengthy write up by Natasha Leonard over on the Intercept isn't enough to make your blood boil, I don't know what it would take to do so. You should read the whole story, but to summarize; a Florida judge just sentenced an anti-fascist to almost four years in federal prison for tweets calling for "armed defense against possible far-right attacks on the state’s Capitol." As Leonard points out, this is obscenely bonkers for several reasons.

First, in the wake of the January 6th Capitol Hill coup attempt, and a widely-publicized FBI warning about possible armed protests by right wing extremists at state capitols, the man (Daniel Baker) had every reason to believe such an attack might happen. Additionally, Baker didn't threaten anyone individually, and took no significant action on the tweet. Finally, the pre-trial and post sentencing total of forty-four months is far longer than most of the fascists who actually tried to overturn an election on January 6th will receive. Yes, you read that correctly; the guy got more time for tweets than armed fascists are getting for trying to hunt down and execute a Vice President.

This story exists at the nexus of so many aspects of the American fascism problem that it's hard to know where to start unpacking them. We're talking about a judiciary and a Justice Department riddled with reactionaries, authoritarians, and fascists; and I don't just mean the ones Trump appointed either. Throw in litigators and fascist-friendly police eager to buttress corporate media claims of a (false) moral equivalency between fascist violence, and those who oppose it. Then you top it all off with a liberal political establishment more than happy to purge the left to appease fascists in right wing politics. Please keep in mind, this is Palooka Joe's DoJ now; Merrick Garland works for him, not Trump.

Look kids, there's a reason I'm constantly telling you to watch what you say on social media, and this is that reason. The machine doesn't need anti-terrorism laws to send leftists to jail for speech in opposition to fascism; they're doing just fine already. It's not an accident when Democrats talk about unity with fascists. Biden doesn't keep blathering on about "anarchists" because he's confused. Liberal antifascism doesn't extend any further than "Orange Man bad," and if they can knife the left to get the GOP to go back to a neoconservative normal, so much the better; it solves two problems for bougie centrists at the same time.

Liberals aren't going to help you fight fascism; they're more likely to throw your ass in jail for threatening order. That's just the bald truth of it.

Homework Assignment 1: Some of Those That Work Forces (Re-post from Facebook)

Author's note: ok, so as I mentioned in my last Media Madness post, the pinheads at Facebook has put me in the awkward position of having to transfer content I've already written someplace off their fascist-appeasing website. I've chosen to move my ongoing series of educational reading assignments here and now I have to re-post the first two.

Please note: the language of these posts is built around Facebook's crappy UI, so when I talk about links in the comments below you can just click on the link that'll be right there in front of you. This post originally appeared on August 16, 2020.

Author's note: I probably should start with the article explaining what is fascism first but I'd hate to waste Umbico's talents on a Sunday evening post when I'm on the wrong end of a thirty-six hour day so let’s start with something literally everyone can understand is fascism – neonazis infiltrating American law enforcement.

Have you seen “the thread” though? Beginning on May 30th, at the height of the protests in response to the extrajudicial execution of George Floyd by Minneapolis murderpigs, defense attorney T. Greg Doucette began compiling a Twitter thread of graphic examples of police violence against largely peaceful demonstrators – the vast majority of which include video evidence. From soccer moms in Portland being teargassed, to police ripping off a man’s artificial legs and with virtually every type of cracker pig violence imaginable in between, Doucette’s thread (which as of this writing stands at a shocking eight hundred and seventy examples of police brutality and contains additional threads with hundreds more examples each in their own right) shows American law enforcement at its finest hour – if you’re a fascist.

I’ll post a link to Doucette’s thread in the comments below, but in today’s homework lesson I’d like to focus on addressing the two most important questions watching videos of fascist police violence like the ones he shared should be calling to mind. First, why are the police treating peaceful political opposition (including an incredibly large number of milquetoast liberals and even African American celebrities) like an invading army in the protesters own streets, and secondly, why do the police appear to be actively protecting violent reactionaries and street nazis, while openly committing outrageous acts of violence against virtually anyone who takes to the streets to protest our fascist President?

This 2017 article by Alice Speri at the Intercept might go a very long way to answering that question for you. Literal f*cking Neonazis have been actively infiltrating American law enforcement for years and the FBI was fully aware of it even before Trump was elected – check it out “The FBI Has Quietly Investigated White Supremacist Infiltration of Law Enforcement” below:

The FBI Has Quietly Investigated White Supremacist Infiltration of Law Enforcement

Supplemental: One of my followers on Twitter helpfully shared this article that focuses on fascist police violence against journalists in specific - once again, if you're not seeing fascism at work here, you're probably trying to avoid seeing it:

U.S. police have attacked journalists at least 140 times since May 28
