Nina-Bytes: Little Pig Power Plays in the American Police State

Editor's note: Nina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

The bigger problem revealed by a viral fight between NYC police and subway riders

Like many left wing analysts, I spend a lot of time studying and writing about violent, racist, and fundamentally reactionary policing in America. Although widespread police brutality against everyday people protesting the murder of George Floyd has opened some eyes about the violence and racism inherent to U.S. policing, there remains precious little discussion in the mainstream about the institutional power police wield in our society. Protected by qualified immunity, aligned with reactionary political power, and armed to the teeth, American cops have become a "troopified" overseer class that exists above the law, and by extension, above the peasantry.

Well, if this October 24th opinion piece by Matthew Guariglia on NBCNews.com is any indication, the public at large is starting to notice. Yes, you read that correctly, NBC News. Using a viral video of a man having his rights violated for asking two New York cops why they aren't wearing masks on the Subway platform as a starting point, the author asks tough questions about authority and oversight that no police reform advocate wants to touch. Although Guarariglia focuses on covid prevention regulations, his prose makes it quite clear he's talking about larger questions of power and control in our society; as does the video. From the article:

"It’s bad enough that mask mandates seemingly do not apply to the officers often tasked with enforcing them. But the altercation in New York City highlights a deeper problem: The way police seek to penalize or harass anyone who dares question the unofficial and ultra-legal privileges of being an officer.

Mask mandates are a canary in the coal mine. If there is no plausible way to get all officers to wear a small strip of fabric that does quantifiable good for the public, what does that say about the institution as a whole? Who really controls police?"

Hot damn, now we're cooking with gas! Of course, the answer is that nobody really controls police; even politicians that want to remove violent cracker cops are terrified of police unions and the political consequences of feuding with armed reactionaries who exist above the law. Furthermore, it's still very much taboo to talk about the nexus between policing, reactionary vigilante violence, and fascist street politics, in the public discourse; you certainly won't find anything about that it in Guariglia's article here. Did you know that on the night Trump lost, New York cops literally rioted on behalf of their favorite fascist failson? Apparently, neither does the mainstream media.

Look, I'm not going to pretend an opinion piece on NBC is the blow that turns the tide against bootlickers and appeasement-loving police reformers. You can't reform an institution built to suppress and segregate marginalized people on behalf of capitalist exploiters; there's nothing good there to reform. But as long as we're still talking about bad apples, and worthless body cameras instead of the institutional power police command and represent, few people will truly understand why abolition is the only answer. If articles like this one take us one baby step forward, I'm all in favor of that.

Nina-Bytes: Weimar American Justice Strikes Again

Editor's note: Nina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

A Florida Anarchist Will Spend Years in Prison for Online Posts Prompted by Jan. 6 Riot

Well, if this lengthy write up by Natasha Leonard over on the Intercept isn't enough to make your blood boil, I don't know what it would take to do so. You should read the whole story, but to summarize; a Florida judge just sentenced an anti-fascist to almost four years in federal prison for tweets calling for "armed defense against possible far-right attacks on the state’s Capitol." As Leonard points out, this is obscenely bonkers for several reasons.

First, in the wake of the January 6th Capitol Hill coup attempt, and a widely-publicized FBI warning about possible armed protests by right wing extremists at state capitols, the man (Daniel Baker) had every reason to believe such an attack might happen. Additionally, Baker didn't threaten anyone individually, and took no significant action on the tweet. Finally, the pre-trial and post sentencing total of forty-four months is far longer than most of the fascists who actually tried to overturn an election on January 6th will receive. Yes, you read that correctly; the guy got more time for tweets than armed fascists are getting for trying to hunt down and execute a Vice President.

This story exists at the nexus of so many aspects of the American fascism problem that it's hard to know where to start unpacking them. We're talking about a judiciary and a Justice Department riddled with reactionaries, authoritarians, and fascists; and I don't just mean the ones Trump appointed either. Throw in litigators and fascist-friendly police eager to buttress corporate media claims of a (false) moral equivalency between fascist violence, and those who oppose it. Then you top it all off with a liberal political establishment more than happy to purge the left to appease fascists in right wing politics. Please keep in mind, this is Palooka Joe's DoJ now; Merrick Garland works for him, not Trump.

Look kids, there's a reason I'm constantly telling you to watch what you say on social media, and this is that reason. The machine doesn't need anti-terrorism laws to send leftists to jail for speech in opposition to fascism; they're doing just fine already. It's not an accident when Democrats talk about unity with fascists. Biden doesn't keep blathering on about "anarchists" because he's confused. Liberal antifascism doesn't extend any further than "Orange Man bad," and if they can knife the left to get the GOP to go back to a neoconservative normal, so much the better; it solves two problems for bougie centrists at the same time.

Liberals aren't going to help you fight fascism; they're more likely to throw your ass in jail for threatening order. That's just the bald truth of it.

In the Aggregate: A Neofeudalist Dystopia on NIDC

Editor’s Note: as of now, In the Aggregate is a regular round-up feature on NIDC, that showcases and expands on my social media analysis from around the web.

Gimme One With Everything

Whelp; in terms of my private war against arbitrary publishing deadlines, it's been a week of ups and downs so far.

Unfortunately, a frustrating tech fail yesterday morning left me without a mid-week essay to publish. Fortunately, I'm so extremely online I was able to make lemonade out of analysis I haven't shared on ninaillingworth.com yet. Combining original material, with most of my recent blogging, and polished highlights from all of my various social media feeds, this epic edition of In the Aggregate should feel like we're hanging out and watching the news together. Whether that cool, or a horrifying nightmare, is a question I'll leave to the historians. Check it out today on NIDC.

"What the liberal establishment refuses to accept is that America has always embraced the same foundational principles this fascist movement is built on. Slavery, genocide, extraction, exploitation, rigid social hierarchies, virulent anti-communism, the national security state; these too are the legacies of American democracy and values. Just because the punditry refuses to acknowledge these truths, doesn’t mean they aren’t real."

Homework Assignment 1: Some of Those That Work Forces (Re-post from Facebook)

Author's note: ok, so as I mentioned in my last Media Madness post, the pinheads at Facebook has put me in the awkward position of having to transfer content I've already written someplace off their fascist-appeasing website. I've chosen to move my ongoing series of educational reading assignments here and now I have to re-post the first two.

Please note: the language of these posts is built around Facebook's crappy UI, so when I talk about links in the comments below you can just click on the link that'll be right there in front of you. This post originally appeared on August 16, 2020.

Author's note: I probably should start with the article explaining what is fascism first but I'd hate to waste Umbico's talents on a Sunday evening post when I'm on the wrong end of a thirty-six hour day so let’s start with something literally everyone can understand is fascism – neonazis infiltrating American law enforcement.

Have you seen “the thread” though? Beginning on May 30th, at the height of the protests in response to the extrajudicial execution of George Floyd by Minneapolis murderpigs, defense attorney T. Greg Doucette began compiling a Twitter thread of graphic examples of police violence against largely peaceful demonstrators – the vast majority of which include video evidence. From soccer moms in Portland being teargassed, to police ripping off a man’s artificial legs and with virtually every type of cracker pig violence imaginable in between, Doucette’s thread (which as of this writing stands at a shocking eight hundred and seventy examples of police brutality and contains additional threads with hundreds more examples each in their own right) shows American law enforcement at its finest hour – if you’re a fascist.

I’ll post a link to Doucette’s thread in the comments below, but in today’s homework lesson I’d like to focus on addressing the two most important questions watching videos of fascist police violence like the ones he shared should be calling to mind. First, why are the police treating peaceful political opposition (including an incredibly large number of milquetoast liberals and even African American celebrities) like an invading army in the protesters own streets, and secondly, why do the police appear to be actively protecting violent reactionaries and street nazis, while openly committing outrageous acts of violence against virtually anyone who takes to the streets to protest our fascist President?

This 2017 article by Alice Speri at the Intercept might go a very long way to answering that question for you. Literal f*cking Neonazis have been actively infiltrating American law enforcement for years and the FBI was fully aware of it even before Trump was elected – check it out “The FBI Has Quietly Investigated White Supremacist Infiltration of Law Enforcement” below:

The FBI Has Quietly Investigated White Supremacist Infiltration of Law Enforcement

Supplemental: One of my followers on Twitter helpfully shared this article that focuses on fascist police violence against journalists in specific - once again, if you're not seeing fascism at work here, you're probably trying to avoid seeing it:

U.S. police have attacked journalists at least 140 times since May 28
