Nina-Bytes: Stochastically Yours in Weimar America

Editor's noteNina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

Rep. Paul Gosar shared an anime video of himself killing AOC. This was her response.

As a socialist writer trapped in a capitalist dystopia, I spend a lot of my time pointing out the links between the study of political economy, and events occurring in the news of the day; you might call it an educational commitment to exploring both theory, and praxis. Earlier today on Instagram, I published a Pinko Postcard discussion that briefly touched on the organized efforts of American fascists to mainstream reactionary ideology and political practices. Here on Nina-Bytes then, I'd like to explore what this normalization and weaponization of fascist political techniques looks like in real time; with an assist from everyone's favorite coup plotter and white supremacist in Congress, Paul Gosar

Given the uniformly atrocious coverage this event has garnered in the mainstream media, I decided to use this November 9th, 2021 post by Rachel Treisman on npr.org as our primary anchor because while it still misses the mark, she at least provides some context on the reactionary nature of Gosar's actions. In case you missed it, Congressman Gosar published an explicitly fascist anti-immigration video that featured modified anime footage of himself murdering Congresswoman, and noted target of reactionary ire, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. While much of the media has inexplicably chosen to cover this event as inter-personal drama between rival factions on the Hill, students of fascist propaganda techniques will recognize immediately that this is no laughing matter. Let's fill in that context, shall we?

The first thing you need to remember is that Paul Gosar is absolutely a fascist; you can call him a Trumpist if you prefer, but because the terms are largely synonymous, it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference. He's spoken at white nationalist conferences, raised money with fascist influencers, and oh yeah, there's that small matter of Gosar's intimate involvement with the January 6th fascist coup plot to overturn the 2020 U.S. presidential election; which reportedly included the Congressman promising blanket pardons to participants in the event of a successful coup. Even this guy's own family says he's a white supremacist.

The second bit of largely-missing context here, comes from the nature of the video Gosar shared, and how it has been edited. The video explicitly employs fascist political propaganda about an "attack of immigrants" and shows multiple elected GOP nazis committing acts of outrageous violence in response, through edited anime clips. Furthermore, given the fact that the anime chosen, Attack on Titan, has strong fascist overtones and has already been coopted by reactionary extremists in the Pig Empire, I don't think the stench of neonazism involved here is any sort of accident. In other words, even if Gosar's staff hadn't depicted him slashing AOC's throat, this would still be a fascist video tweeted out by a sitting Congressman in America.

Finally of course, there's the context of the violence depicted in its own right, and Gosar's predictable keyboard reactionary response to being criticized for it. While crackers and collaborators absurdly pretend that folks are accusing Gosar of literally threatening to cut Ocasio-Cortez's head off with a sword, the specter of stochastic terrorism and the usefulness (for the fascists) of injecting the threat of violence into standard political discourse, is largely ignored. Even the bizarre insistence from the Congressman's office that folks "relax" because it's just "a cartoon" echoes the standard playbook of f*ckboi "ironic" nazis online.

Frankly the truly alarming thing about this story is that we as a society, and mainstream American media as an institution, already know all of this because we've collectively seen it all before. Sara Palin taught the media that right wing politicians are fine with stochastic terrorism as long as their rhetoric fires up the base. Andrew Anglin's leaked style guide for the Daily Stormer makes it clear that nazis are actively trying to mainstream fascist ideology every waking moment of the day. We know ironic nazism, is really just nazism. And as of last week, we can no longer deny the fact that these folks are fascists, actively plotting an authoritarian takeover of America, and the larger Pig empire.

It would be nice if an American media establishment that claims to be defending democracy from the fascist creep, deemed all that worth mentioning in between blow by blow coverage of the back and forth between Gosar and the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, it's just not in their nature.

Beefing with White Supremacy in Online Left Spaces on NIDC

Editor’s note: welcome back to Film Sessions; a monthly feature on NIDC in which I share, analyze and expand on a relevant video created by someone on the left wing of YouTube.

Left Solidarity and Abolishing Whiteness

Hello my friends; happy, um, November I guess. After taking a month to kind of re-establish my bearings and fire up a new blog, I'm back in the swing of things early with a new essay-length Film Sessions post on ninaillingworth.com. Today we're returning to important discussions about whiteness, and the corrosive nature of low-key white supremacist ideology in online left spaces; with an assist from a creator never-before featured in our study rotation. Join me as we examine John the Duncan's new video about why decolonization is not genocide, and Vaush is not a credible source of left wing analysis; this month in Film Sessions.

"In practice then, whiteness is about stigmatizing, delegitimizing, and dehumanizing non-white people in an extremely pervasive, everyday sort of way. This tracks well with history, because whiteness is not a naturally occurring concept; it was invented justify genocide and slavery while greasing the wheels of settler colonial capitalism."

NinaBytes: Police State Fascism Is a Bipartisan Position

Editor's noteNina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

Biden’s DOJ uses a Trump tactic: Federal prosecutors label Black Lives Matter protesters terrorists

In an odious sort of sequel to yesterday's blog post, I'd like to share this opinion piece by Rachel Barkow over at the Daily News. Maybe I'm just not the brightest light on the porch, but liberals are going to have to answer a simple question for me on this one. Namely, which part of stopping the fascists is this?

How exactly does continuing to push accusations of terrorism in what amounts to a property damage case, serve the public interest or match Biden's political rhetoric about racial equality? These folks are absolutely not terrorists, and they put no lives whatsoever in danger. The NY Daily News used their mug shots, but both of the defendants (Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman) are lawyers who were protesting against racialized police violence during the George Floyd demonstrations. In other words; in the 1960's the papers would be calling them civil rights workers. We're trying to put civil rights workers in jail for decades still, even after Trump? What kind of Hooverism is this Joe?

Don't think for a second that I'm exaggerating here. Sentencing these two as "terrorists" for throwing a Molotov at an abandoned police car, while not perusing the same "terrorism" escalator in a case that involved burning a police vehicle, but had nothing to do with protesting for racial justice, makes it clear that this prosecution is purely political. The Department of Justice is cutting deals that reduce a fascist coup attempt to misdemeanor charges, but they're trying to put a couple of racial justice activists with law degrees away for decades. Does that sound like justice, or stopping white supremacy to you?

As the author notes, Palooka Joe's hand picked U.S. Attorney for Eastern New York could step in and stop this travesty, but there's plenty of reasons to believe the president probably won't tell him to do so. This is after all the guy who ran on law and order against Downmarket Mussolini of all people. Like I said yesterday, Biden and the Democratic Party's right wing always planned to sacrifice the left and activists to appease the fascists. This is what it looks like in real time; sending civil rights activist lawyers to jail for decades to look tough for cornpone nazis in the cracker discourse.

In the Aggregate: A Neofeudalist Dystopia on NIDC

Editors Note: as of now, In the Aggregate is a regular round-up feature on NIDC, that showcases and expands on my social media analysis from around the web.

Gimme One With Everything

Whelp; in terms of my private war against arbitrary publishing deadlines, it's been a week of ups and downs so far.

Unfortunately, a frustrating tech fail yesterday morning left me without a mid-week essay to publish. Fortunately, I'm so extremely online I was able to make lemonade out of analysis I haven't shared on ninaillingworth.com yet. Combining original material, with most of my recent blogging, and polished highlights from all of my various social media feeds, this epic edition of In the Aggregate should feel like we're hanging out and watching the news together. Whether that cool, or a horrifying nightmare, is a question I'll leave to the historians. Check it out today on NIDC.

"What the liberal establishment refuses to accept is that America has always embraced the same foundational principles this fascist movement is built on. Slavery, genocide, extraction, exploitation, rigid social hierarchies, virulent anti-communism, the national security state; these too are the legacies of American democracy and values. Just because the punditry refuses to acknowledge these truths, doesnt mean they arent real."

Nina-Bytes: Running Down State-Sanctioned Fascist Violence

Editor's note: Nina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web. This post is archival and originally appeared on October 2nd, 2021 over on our Facebook page.

State-level Republicans are making it easier to run over protesters

One of the key hallmarks of a nominal liberal democracy's transformation into an overt fascist state, is the way public sector or state power will intertwine itself with reactionary paramilitaries; thereby sharing its monopoly on violence and intimidation with "the brownshirts" as it were.

Typically this arrangement will take one of three major forms. The state may act as a direct enforcement arm for the fascist agenda, as we saw in the assassination of Michael Reinohl. The state may also establish a quasi-legal enforcement arrangement with reactionary vigilantes, as we observed in the Mother Jones story about Bedford County, Virginia’s officially sanctioned militia. Finally of course, pro-fascist actors in the state can simply legalize vigilante enforcement of fascist norms, which is what we’re looking at here with these laws making it effectively legal to run down protesters with your car.

Of course Wingers will howl that the purpose of these laws are to protect innocent drivers accosted by protesters, but even a casual glance at the statistics demonstrates that’s a crock of bullsh*t. America doesn’t have a massive protesters-attacking-cars problem, but throughout our last major summer of protests, angry reactionaries have frequently slammed their cars into innocent people exercising their right of free assembly – there’s even a Wikipedia entry for the phenomenon.

As demonstrated (with citations) throughout this article, these laws are clearly both political in nature, and racialized in practice; these laws are being enacted in response to what amounts to a second American civil rights movement. Whenever you combine political power, with codified racialized suppression, and vigilante violence, you’re looking at the practice of fascism; whether those practicing it want to admit it or not.

The purpose behind enacting these laws could not be more clear. They exist to suppress mass protest and enforce white supremacy by enlisting reactionary vigilantes to enact potentially lethal violence as a form of mass intimidation.

This is the core of both the fascist project, and the reactionary terrorism it employs. This right here is what separates a fascist creep from simple reactionary thugs; the rubber stamp of legal sanction and legitimacy granted by the fusion of far right violence, with reactionary policy; in this case enacted by the GOP at the state level.

That in a nutshell, is what fascism looks like in practice.
