Nina-Bytes: Framea Thrust

Editor's noteNina-Bytes is a weekday blogging series that features short analysis and commentary on articles from around the web.

In the fall of 2022, the ongoing evolution of American fascism forced me out of my comfort zone as an antifascist analyst in a starkly personal way. Although transphobia and anti-gay persecution have always churned in the undercurrents of modern fascism, the year-long lead up to the 2022 U.S. midterm elections exposed a well-funded, GOP-supported plan to make an anti-trans pogrom a foundational organizing principle for "respectable" fascists in American politics. Predictably, this escalation of trans and LGBTQ persecution in everyday politics worked to unite violent street fascists with Republican fascists in politics, leading to an immediate outbreak of violence and murderous acts of stochastic terrorism.

Unfortunately, even sympathetic media outlets chose to report this phenomenon almost exclusively as it pertained to the (then) upcoming American election. When firing up the trans pogrom failed to produce a Republican "red wave" victory, an already transphobic American establishment quickly lost interest in defending, or even discussing trans rights. As I and many others warned however, an election in which the fascist party seized control of Congress, and numerous transphobes with real political power won re-election, was no sign whatsoever that this latest era of pogrom as politics was now over. Today, just as in Nazi Germany, persecuting trans people, particularly under the guise of protecting children, remains an important skeleton key in the fascist strategy to unlock political power.

How important is transphobia to the American fascist project? Important enough that after attempting to pass a record number of anti-trans bills in 2022, more legislative attacks on trans rights are at the top of the agenda for Republican-controlled state houses here in 2023. For more details, let's turn to this January 7th, 2023 report by Hannah Schoenbaum for AP News:

States target transgender health care in first bills of 2023

I chose this article because unlike the overwhelming majority of mainstream news reports about the anti-trans hate campaign motivating American fascists, this piece does an acceptable job of summarizing the facts within the proper context of this coordinated incitement, albeit barely. Even without mentioning the existence of a larger fascist pogrom however, those facts are themselves quite revealing. As Schoenbaum reports, just days into the 2023 legislative season, eleven GOP-controlled states have introduced or pre-filed bills that would severely restrict trans peoples' access to gender affirming healthcare. This is in addition to continued attacks on trans existence in public life that were also the focus of GOP legislatures in 2021, and 2022.

Crucially for our discussion here however, the majority of these bills are clearly designed to attack and intimidate vital medical, community, and even family support for young trans people, as noted by our author:

"Gender-affirming health care providers and parents of trans youths are the primary targets of these bills, many of which seek to criminalize helping a trans child obtain what doctors and psychologists widely consider “medically necessary care.”

As informed observers have noted, there is of course a method to this malfeasance. Criminalizing the support networks trans people rely on, particularly young trans people, is a way of legally enshrining the othering and de-personing of trans identities. This enforced isolation and dehumanization is a necessary precursor step recognized by scholars as part of the process of genocide, or in this case, a culture-war infused pogrom against trans people. Further demonstrating the point that this is about driving trans people out of public existence and not "protecting the children" is the fact that many of these bills actively restrict adult medical choices regarding transition:

"Legislation pre-filed this week in Republican-controlled Oklahoma, which passed restrictions last year on trans participation in sports and school bathroom usage, seeks to ban gender-affirming care for patients under age 26 and block it from being covered under the state’s Medicaid program.
“This is the worst anti-trans bill I have ever seen filed in any state,” [Erin] Reed said, noting that adult medical transition bans were a “hypothetical escalation” until recently.
Another Oklahoma proposal would prohibit distribution of public funds to organizations that provide gender-affirming procedures to patients younger than 21.
“It’s irresponsible for anybody in health care to provide or recommend life-altering surgeries that may later be regretted,” said the bill’s sponsor, Republican state Rep. Jim Olsen. “Performing irreversible procedures on young people can do irreparable harm to them mentally and physically later in life.”
A similar bill pre-filed in South Carolina, where Republicans control both chambers, also requires that trans adults older than 21 obtain referrals from their doctor and a licensed psychiatrist before they can begin treatment."

Friends, what we're looking at here is a closed loop of fact-free, fascist fuckery. Under the guise of preventing nonexistent child abuse, Republican lawmakers are seeking to criminalize medically-necessary gender affirming care for trans people well into adulthood, thereby legally enshrining fascist propaganda designed to marginalize, and incite violence towards trans people and the larger LGBTQ+ community. If the law says trans care is child abuse and legally inaccessible, it doesn't matter at all what individual Americans feel or believe. Which brings us back to the horrifying context of a larger fascist campaign to isolate, terrorize, and de-person the entire queer community; from the article:

"Cathy Renna, spokesperson for the National LGBTQ Task Force, said she views these bills as the product of “a permissible climate of hate,” driven by disinformation and fearmongering, that made anti-LGBTQ rhetoric more palatable in the years since former President Donald Trump’s election in 2016.
“We have politicians, celebrities and just folks in our communities who were given permission under Trump to kind of pick that scab and do and say harmful things without consequence,” Renna said. “It unleashed a nightmare Pandora’s box of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism.”
“When you look at the last few years,” she said of the LGBTQ community, “we feel like we’re under attack in a way that we have not for decades.”

These anti-trans bills are not the first attacks on queer existence in American life, nor will they be the last. The literal erasure of LGBTQ+ identities in our society is not an election ploy designed to win votes; it is a tool which organized fascists dominating American political and cultural life are using to install an objectively fascist order from above. The eradication of queer identities is not only a foundational goal in fascist ideology, but it infamously has a proven track record of empowering fascist domination of nominally liberal democratic societies already. Legalized assaults on trans rights are quite literally the tip of the fascist spear; and latent transphobia in American society is the breach politically empowered nazis are exploiting to seize power.

The simple truth is that you can't beat fascism at the ballot box, you can only slow it down; and anyone who told you otherwise, was probably just looking for your vote. If we're prepared to let fascists criminalize trans people, and drive queer folks out of public life today, there is no limit to who American nazis will target and de-person tomorrow. As a society, we no longer have the luxury of considering trans and queer rights a niche political issue; this isn't about empathy, it's about stopping billionaire-backed fascists from legislating anyone who disagrees with them out of public existence. We will all stand together here, or we will surely die apart; once again I advise you to choose wisely.

In the Aggregate: Critical Overload on NIDC

Editor’s NoteIn the Aggregate is a regular round-up feature over on NIDC, that showcases and expands on my social media analysis from around the web.

It's All in the Wrists

Well my friends; the world doesn't stop just because you've had a difficult week and you'd rather play with kittens. This weekend I'm back with a new edition of In the Aggregate; collecting the very best of my social media analysis from all across the internet. I hope you've got a comfy chair because this is a long one. Touching on topics like climate crisis, supervillain billionaires, and the growing menace of American fascism, this edition of our bi-weekly roundup is a swirling vortex of bullsh*t repellent. Join me this week on NIDC for "In the Aggregate: Critical Overload."

"At this point, whether it’s a question of complicity, fecklessness, or cowardice is largely irrelevant; the center-right Democratic Party establishment and those who insist we place our faith in them are leading us all on a death march towards fascist totalitarianism on a boiling planet. You can kindly shove Godwin’s Law up your backside; the parallels between the elite “centrist” response to Americanized fascism and what went down in Weimar Germany are now becoming far too alarming to ignore. We are literally already in the fascist moment; and liberals are still waiting around for the magical politics referee to punish the right."

Beefing with White Supremacy in Online Left Spaces on NIDC

Editor’s note: welcome back to Film Sessions; a monthly feature on NIDC in which I share, analyze and expand on a relevant video created by someone on the left wing of YouTube.

If you're wondering why I've moved these posts off of Media Madness, check out this mid-October content update notice

Left Solidarity and Abolishing Whiteness

Hello my friends; happy, um, November I guess. After taking a month to kind of re-establish my bearings and fire up a new blog, I'm back in the swing of things early with a new essay-length Film Sessions post on ninaillingworth.com. Today we're returning to important discussions about whiteness, and the corrosive nature of low-key white supremacist ideology in online left spaces; with an assist from a creator never-before featured in our study rotation. Join me as we examine John the Duncan's new video about why decolonization is not genocide, and Vaush is not a credible source of left wing analysis; this month in Film Sessions.

"In practice then, whiteness is about stigmatizing, delegitimizing, and dehumanizing non-white people in an extremely pervasive, everyday sort of way. This tracks well with history, because whiteness is not a naturally occurring concept; it was invented justify genocide and slavery while greasing the wheels of settler colonial capitalism."

Film Sessions: the 1776 Report and Cultural Marxism with Skull Boy

Editor's note: welcome back to Film Sessions; our quasi-regular feature here on Media Madness in which I share, analyze and expand on a relevant video created by someone on the left wing of YouTube.

Cracker Historical Revisionism

Buckle up lads and lasses; we're in for some real egg-head shit today. Way back when I first thought up the idea of this Film Sessions series, one of my major goals was to find a way to analyze and share the type of DIY intellectual discussions I'd observed in video essays by a few specific creators; some of whom we've featured here already, and some we haven't yet, but hope to eventually.

I'm happy to say that after what appears to be a long break, one of those OG creators is making video essays again and today we're going to feature his work in this space; his name is Shaun. No, really, just Shaun; although he also goes by Youtuber Shaun, Shaun Vids, and Skull Boy apparently - as far as I know, the skull on the left is a self portrait. Armed primarily with his intellect and British accent, Shaun's decidedly low-tech debunking of bloviating right wing shitlords is somewhat legendary in online spaces; for a good example of this phenomenon in action, feel free to check out any one of the three videos linked in this sequence.

As I hope the video we're going to watch today will demonstrate however, what sets Shaun apart in my eyes is his willingness to go well beyond debunking, and engage the ideas and ideologies driving reactionary thought in the Pig Empire. I've mentioned in the past that debunking isn't much good if you're not teaching the kind of critical thinking necessary to recognize and obstruct revanchism in the wild; but Shaun's debunking videos seem to go that extra mile to actually teach you something about why fascists and right wing extremists behave the way they do, at the same time.

This is of course particularly important regarding the subject of today's video, Trump's stillborn "1776 Report" because the reasons why this absurd document remains important, have nothing to do with the future life of the document itself; as Shaun notes early in the video, Biden had the report deleted from the government's websites almost immediately after taking office. At this point you might be asking yourself why I'm recommending you watch a fifty-seven minute video about Trump's final propaganda stunt, but as our skeletal essayist reveals in this presentation - there's something larger and far more sinister going on here than a make-work project for fascist muppets like Charlie Kirk.

Confused yet? Okay, let's rewind and take it from the top then.

What is the 1776 (Commission) Report?

As it turns out, answering that simple question really depends on how deep down the reactionary rabbit hole you want to go. On the surface, the so-called 1776 Report is a racist, cynical, and half-assed attempt by fascists, conspiracy theorists, and Trump cronies to re-write early American history in forty-five pages of white supremacist drivel. You could also say it's ahistorical bullshit and an example of openly dishonest scholarship, but given that literally none of the people involved in producing it were historians, that might be a bit redundant; assuming that's even possible in this situation. Finally, an astute observer might note that the 1776 Commission is ultimately Trump's fragile cracker manbaby response to the 1619 Project; a Pulitzer-Prize winning New York Times series that seeks to center the role of slavery, and the African American experience in the study of American history.

What's Really Going on Here?

You mean besides thinly-veiled white supremacy? Well, it's obviously an attempt to essentially write the truth about slavery, abolition, and African American resistance out of the classroom; thereby indoctrinating future generations with a baseline set of beliefs that will tolerate, prolong, and reinforce white supremacist structures in American life. While the report is certainly an attack on history, it's also fundamentally an attack on social justice and Black agency as well. As if that weren't insidious enough, the report also explicitly attempts to cast educators and critical race theorists who do teach the truth about America's origins, as attacking the United States; thus, the 1776 Commission Report is a direct assault on teachers, historians, and critical observers, hidden within the false glow of "patriotism" and national pride.

What's at the Bottom of this Pit?

I'm glad you asked; the end game here is nothing less than a plot to promote a far-right conspiracy theory known as "Cultural Marxism" and then use that conspiracy theory to justify a new kind of McCarthyism (or Hooverism) against the ideological enemies of the American fascist movement. Putting this explicitly racist, anti-Semitic, anti-intellectual, and anti-progressive nonsense on paper, ultimately allows fascists throughout American academic and political life to point to an official commission paper (even a pile of nonsense like the 1776 Report) that supports silencing their opposition in the name of defending the Fatherland. And if that sounds silly to you, I'd suggest you stop laughing because this is literally how both "Red Scares" and COINTELPRO happened and clearly what Trump's flunkies were hoping to accomplish with this last-minute, now-cancelled report. Furthermore, as multiple observers have noted, Biden's decision to merely cancel the report doesn't do enough to prevent that possibility.

Of course the above points are merely a synopsis of what's going on in Shaun's video; a lengthy presentation which explores these topics in greater detail. In addition to debunking literal nazi propaganda, our presenter also finds time to clown on some fraudulent Republican "intellectuals" and even provides a back-of-the-napkin left wing critique of the 1619 Project that has literally nothing to do with Trump's incoherent ravings. While there's no question that the 1776 Commission Report is in many ways a standard example of Trump's reactionary assclown nonsense, this video goes a long way towards demonstrating that not everything is about the Klepto Kaiser's vanity; guys like Stephen Miller are playing a much longer and more explicitly fascist game with this report.

Overall, there's just a whole lot to like here in this discussion and as such I'm excited to recommend it in this edition of Film Sessions; even if the presentation is certainly a little short on eye candy. You can check out Shaun's "the 1776 Report" by clicking the header below, or watching the embedded video itself:

Film Sessions: Digging Up Roots (of Whiteness)

Editor's note: welcome back to Film Sessions; our quasi-regular feature here on Media Madness in which I share, analyze and expand on a relevant video created by someone on the left wing of YouTube.

Digging Up Roots

Hey folks; remember me? As you may have already heard, I've been caught up in a remarkably frustrating month, or three, of feeling like an observer trapped outside my own ongoing experience. Frankly that hasn't been a whole lot of fun, and as such I haven't been a whole lot of fun to be around. Obviously, I'm back now, but I'd be lying if I told you that this tumultuous period hasn't had a profoundly disruptive effect on my work.

I mention this because right before a poorly timed Twitter ban largely separated me from my social support network, I published what I consider a very important essay on Can't You Read entitled "On Whiteness, Identity Politics and the Pig Empire Left." Although that essay focused primarily on the dangers of ignoring white centrism when it emerges in left wing organizing, and why a reactionary brand of "anti-identity politics" isn't going to build the broad coalition socialists need to succeed against the capitalist machine, it was never meant to be my final word on the subject of whiteness. While the term itself may elicit some nervous giggles, the simple truth is that for a white person, understanding the mental state of "whiteness" is a foundational precursor for discovering a wholly racialized world, necessary for the continued function of primitive capitalist accumulation; a world that has previously been hidden from them by an insidious type of normalized social propaganda about, well, class, capitalism, and racism in the Pig Empire.

Of course I'm more than aware that this might be an uncomfortable subject for certain portions of the reading public; I myself have spent half a lifetime avoiding awkward conversations about race, racialization, and what W.E.B. Du Bois called the "psychological wages" of white skin privilege. Eventually however, as I grew a little older and perhaps a little wiser, I discovered that walling oneself off from uncomfortable discussions about white supremacy was not only an act of selfish, gutless cowardice; but it is also utterly self-defeating for anyone who wants to call themselves a leftist. In light of the intrinsic and inseparable class relationships between capitalism and racism, racialization and exploitation, or privilege and power; there is no such thing as a leftism that doesn't identify and oppose the settler colonial mindset. To talk about race, is to talk about power dynamics, social hierarchies, and the "divide and exploit" strategy that underpins the entire capitalist project; and vice versa. This is, to put it bluntly, very serious business for any Pig Empire anti-capitalist.

Given the importance of this discussion then, I'd like to return to the topic of whiteness by examining a twenty-seven minute video essay called "Whiteness: WTF? White Privilege and the Invisible Race" by Tom Nicholas; the creator of a series we've featured a few times here on Film Sessions, which is titled "What the Theory." Whereas my original essay was explicitly focused on how centering whiteness endangers left wing organizational efforts, in this video Tom offers a more academic study of whiteness itself; what is it, where did it come from, and how do we combat the ideologic framework it inspires in our society?

As always, ridiculously high production values and exceptional organization remain a hallmark of the What the Theory series; and this episode is no different. Dividing his discussion into easily-digestible packets, Tom explores key background issues like the invention of race as a sociological concept essential to colonial capitalism, why whiteness and the racialization of Pig Empire societies remain largely invisible to many white people, what we actually mean by the phrase "white privilege," and how latent white supremacy shapes our society in ways that are overtly hostile towards nonwhites, but remain studiously ignored by white folks themselves. Drawing on important scholars in the broader field of critical race theory, including Charles W. MillsPeggy McIntosh, Sara Ahmed, and W.E.B. Du Bois, Nicholas ultimately identifies recognizing whiteness as a vital first step in the praxis of dismantling white supremacy; which in turn, makes it a vital first step in the praxis of dismantling capitalism.

Overall I think "Whiteness: WTF? White Privilege and the Invisible Race" is an excellent video, but if I were forced to offer a couple of criticisms, I'd probably start by saying I wished Nicholas had been more explicit about the triangular relationship between genocidal colonialism, white supremacy, and capitalism even as we understand it today. Additionally, I found the (brief) inclusion of Robin DiAngelo as an authoritative source a little off-putting, given the extremely well documented problems with her bestselling book "White Fragility: Why it’s so Hard for White People to Talk About Race." While the context in which Tom quotes DiAngelo in this video is entirely appropriate, I'd hate to give folks the impression that a corporatized anti-racism training program disguised as a book, represented any sort of reasonable answer to the ongoing problems of whiteness, white supremacy, and white-centric thought.

Despite these hiccups however, this video offers an excellent primer on both whiteness as a concept, and its relation to white supremacy - you can check it out by clicking the header, or watching the embedded video itself, below:

Just before my most recent sabbatical, a friend of mine was kind enough to share this short presentation by the (seemingly) anarcho-communist channel NonCompete with me. I bring this up because this charmingly casual celebration of left wing online analysts who've successfully predicted aspects of our current descent into hellworld, briefly mentions my work studying the origins and political ascendency of modern American fascism. Originally after seeing it, my intention was to offer my thanks to "Emerican Johnson" by writing a full breakdown of "Why the Left is Always Right: Systemic Analysis" but the honest to god truth is that I don't really have a whole lot to add here. Johnson's theory that left wing analysts can seem to predict the future because they engage in systemic (often, but not always, Marxist) analysis is pretty much on point and warrants little elaboration.

Instead then, please allow me to simply thank the NonCompete channel for recognizing my work and including me in their impressive (and useful) list of left wing analysts to watch out for. I am truly grateful and hope to be able to return the favor at some later point in time. As always, you can check it out by clicking the header, or watching the embedded video itself, below:
